Over $5Million raised by Australian Open players to benefit Bushfire Relief

Professional tennis’ Nick Kyrgios, a native of Australia, led the benefit efforts to raise money and awareness for relief efforts for the Australian bushfires, which continue to burn almost a week after the end of the Australian Open. International audiences watched in disbelief as winds blew smoke from the fires across Melbourne and their tv screens, causing air-quality measures to be put in place and play to be suspended upon conditions becoming dangerous for athletes and fans alike. Kyrgios and his community’s efforts raised over $5Million (AUS) for aide, beginning with his Rally for Relief, a pre-Australian Open event, that saw the likes of Australia’s tennis stars joined by the likes of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Coco Gauff and Venus Williams. Once again, sport stars are using their platforms to raise relief money and impact situations undoubtedly due to climate change. Australia continues to see impacts from rising global temperatures that have resulted in an 89% decrease in new coral production in it’s Great Barrier Reef, a report cited last April in the journal, Nature.
